Oh Belize, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways…
I recently returned from my first trip to Belize and already can’t wait to go back. This amazing country is full of surprises and secrets. It’s a land of beauty and adventure with no lack of things to do and stunning landscapes.
Belize generally lives up to its reputation as one of those “best kept secrets”. A lot of people I spoke to didn’t even know where it was unless they had been there. Some thought it was an island. Others asked if it was in the South Pacific. Those who had been there still knew very little about it – their impressions being mainly from a short stopover during a Caribbean cruise only affording them some time in Belize City (Note: Belize City is not a place where anyone would willingly wish to spend much time, nor is it a fair representative of the country as a whole).
There is so much I could say about Belize, but for now I’d love to share a few of the things that made me fall in love with Belize…and why I think you will, too.
1. The Privacy
Belize is one of those amazing destinations that somehow has been largely overlooked by the masses that flock to the Caribbean each and every year. The best part is that, even if people begin flocking there, the country is dedicated to keeping 60% of its lands preserved and undeveloped. Oh, and that’s to say nothing of the dozens of islands sprinkled off the coast – many of them uninhabited. Privacy in Belize will live on.
2. The Variety
No matter what you’re looking for – from adventure to deserted beaches – Belize has it ready and waiting. It’s a country that houses multiple ecosystems (Riverine, Jungle, Marine, Coral Reef, and Savannah) each with their own unique beauty. So diverse, it will amaze you…and that’s not even including the fact that Belize has the highest concentration of Myan ruins in Mesoamerica. Yeah, so variety? Check.
3. The Tranquility
In Belize, tranquility can be found almost anywhere. Standing in the cool, carpeted quiet of the jungle encased in the canopy of giant trees overhead, you can’t help but feel at peace. Or try a deserted, private beach with only the sound of the waves on the shore and the wind as it blows through the palms. Take a swim with manatees and whale sharks…or go diving in the Great Blue Hole. Tranquility at its best.
4. The Luxury
There is no lack of luxury in Belize. The landscape itself feels luxurious even without amazing amenities afforded by some of the top resorts in the world. Virtuoso has singled out three amazing properties: Cayo Espanto, Turtle Inn, and Blancaneaux Lodge.
Fun fact: Blancaneaux and Turtle Inn are both featured in the book, Once in a Lifetime: Travel & Leisure Redefied. Cool, huh?
5. The Photography
A multi-ecosystem land filled with wildlife, ruins, mountains, and the world’s second largest barrier reef make for a photographer’s paradise. And with a country so beautiful, even if you’re an amateur, you’ll still will come away with fantastic photos that will make all your friends and family jealous.
