As part of our Azamara Journey Norway Intensive Cruise, my 16-year-old nephew and I are spending a day in Alta, Norway — a place where ancient history, rugged wilderness, and modern adventure all converge in spectacular style.
We’re about to set off on a private hike up Komsa Hill, and we’re buzzing with excitement to experience Alta the way it was meant to be — slow, soulful, and surrounded by breathtaking Arctic landscapes.
Morning: Setting Out to Komsa
- Our Adventure: Hiking to the summit of Komsa Hill, where ancient rock carvings and panoramic views connect the past and present.
- Why Komsa?: This area is rich with Stone Age history and Sami culture. Plus, the views over Alta Fjord are absolutely worth the climb.
Pro Tip: This hike is a hidden gem — and hiking early means crisp air, soft morning light, and (hopefully) a little solitude.
Midday: Savoring Arctic Stillness
- Post-Hike Reward: A cozy lunch in Alta, perhaps at a local café known for serving Arctic char and fresh-baked pastries.
- Slow Moments: Sitting outside, breathing the cleanest air imaginable, watching reindeer nibble through the distant hills (yes, really).
Insider Tip: I always build in “unplanned” time on purpose. Magic happens when you’re not rushing.
Afternoon: Optional Extra Adventures
Depending on our post-hike energy (and how many cinnamon buns are consumed at lunch…), we’re leaving the afternoon flexible for:
- Visiting the Alta Museum: To explore 6,000-year-old rock carvings.
- Relaxing at the Northern Lights Cathedral: Modern architecture meets Arctic spirituality.
- Strolling the shores of Alta Fjord.
